Stop Two – Sucharda’s House ENG
Novopacko has its unique atmosphere. For many, the image of the landscape and the memory of the landscape create the land of returns, and they have written their stories into it. Any many have also found inspiration for their work in it, leaving here their pictures, sculptures, graphic art, poems, …
This stop is located at Sucharda’s House, built in the Neo-renaissance style in 1896. A distinctive feature of the house is the remarkable ornamentation. The adornments on the house and the neighbouring workshop were created by members of a famous family of sculptors – the Suchardas (Antonín Sucharda, Stanislav Sucharda and Vojtěch Sucharda, Anna Suchardová Boudová) and their friends. The sgraffito of St. Božetěch was created according to a design by Mikoláš Aleš. The artists documented their sense of humour by placing funny and witty sayings on the house’s facade.
The story of the artistic tradition began in the nearby Stará Paka where the founder of the tradition Jan Sucharda Sr. (1770 – 1820) was born.
The first floor of the building houses the exhibition of sculptor Stanislav Sucharda (1866 – 1916), a member and a chair of The Mánes Association of Fine Artists, who authored the monument of František Palacký in Prague, and of the woodcarver and sculptor Vojtěch Sucharda (1884 – 1968), whose marionette puppets are part of our collections protected by UNESCO. After 1945, Vojtěch Sucharda authored apostles for the Prague Astronomical Clock.
The local exhibition tells the story of life in Nová Paka and around the town – its settlement, the influences throughout its history, and the special atmosphere and stories of people who lived and worked here.
Sucharda’s House used to be a lively venue for meetings of the artistic community; at present, the ground floor of the building houses an exhibition hall where exhibitions take place regularly.
Standing at the former Sucharda’ workshop, close your eyes and listen – perhaps you will hear the beating of hammers that used to deliver intriguing images from wood and stone.
This place used to be an interesting sight: stone sculpture, wood carving, picture restoration, and marionette puppeteering.
