Stop Nine – The Paulaner Apothecary ENG

The former old gable house whose construction finished on 27 October 1789 was financed by František Tomeš. The house underwent reconstruction in 2015. On the right, there is the house of the former Paulaner apothecary no. 153. Originally, the Paulaner apothecary was located in the monastery. Subsequently, it was moved to the house under the rosary stairway. In 1790, when the Paulaner order in Nová Paka was cancelled, the apothecary became the property of Josef Geisler, a former provisor of the monasterial apothecary in Kartouzy, who subsequently ran the apothecary for about two years. Above the counter, there used to be a big sculpture of a white unicorn whose “healing horn” was supposed to treat a variety of conditions. It is said that a “fiery ruby” was fitted beneath the horn.
