PANNING ENG

Pyropes (Bohemian garnets) are frequently found in the local alluvial deposits; their size can be up to several millimetres. They are famous for their bright red colour. Their density is higher than that of sand in which they are found. For this reason, they may be extracted using the method of panning (as with gold). The method is based on the principle combining centrifugal force and gravity. Following the instructions, you can try panning yourself.

Take a handful of sand and a reasonable amount of water.

After thorough washing, heavier grains accumulate in the middle of the pan. The garnets are very likely to be found among them.

The garnets are small (a few millimetres at most) and distinctively red when held against the light!

Proceed slowly and carefully to avoid spilling the entire content including the garnets!
